Schools and colleges will be closed across multiple states on April 9, 2026, due to State Assembly elections in various states. Schools will be closed in Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The holiday has not been restricted to educational institutions but has been extended to government offices, private institutions, and commercial entities across critical locations, making it a civic holiday on the day of the election.
Kerala and Puducherry impose a total holiday
In Kerala, which will witness voting for all 140 seats of the Legislative Assembly in one phase itself, there will be a total closure of educational institutions, whether run by the government, aided, or privately. The state with a strong tradition of high electoral turnout will see polling booths erected across many schools. Puducherry, with its total of 30 Assembly seats, is going to witness a total closure of schools and colleges.
School closures in Assam
In the case of Assam, where voting will be conducted in all 126 Assembly seats, district-level administrations will probably issue orders for closing schools in those parts which would serve as polling stations. However, the decision will not be uniformly made at the state level, but school buildings are sure to be used for conducting the polling process.
