The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced summer vacations for schools falling under the Summer Zone of the Jammu Division as several districts continue to reel under intense heatwave conditions. The decision, which applies to both government and private schools, comes amid rising concerns over the health and safety of students attending classes during extreme weather conditions.Temperatures in parts of the Jammu region, including Samba and Jammu, have crossed 43 degrees Celsius in recent days, disrupting normal life and increasing heat-related risks. Officials said the move was taken to protect schoolchildren from prolonged exposure to excessive heat during daytime hours.
Vacation schedule announced for schools
Education Minister Sakina Itoo shared the announcement through a post on X and said the revised schedule had been prepared keeping the prevailing weather conditions in mind.According to the government notification, summer vacations for primary classes will begin from June 1, 2026. For students studying in Classes 6 to 12, the holidays will start from June 8, 2026.In her statement, the minister said, “Keeping in view the prevailing weather conditions, summer vacations for schools falling under Summer Zone of Jammu Division shall commence w.e.f. 01.06.2026 for Primary Classes and w.e.f. 08.06.2026 for students of Classes 6th to 12th. Wishing all students a safe and enjoyable vacation.”
Heatwave prompts precautionary measures
Officials said the ongoing heatwave has significantly affected daily activities across several parts of the Jammu region. The administration noted that continuing school operations during peak summer conditions could pose health risks to students, particularly younger children.Authorities have also advised parents and students to remain cautious during the vacation period and avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun during afternoon hours. Residents have been urged to stay hydrated and follow safety precautions as high temperatures are expected to continue over the coming days.
